Are you an empath?

luca-iaconelli-242679-unsplash

Sometimes empaths are confused with highly sensitive people.  They both have a low threshold for stimulation, they both require time alone, have highly attuned senses particularly to sound, smell and light and they both try to avoid large groups of people.  Most highly sensitive people are typically introverts where empaths can be either introverts or extroverts.  Both have a desire to spend time in nature and quiet spaces, have an innate desire to help others and both enjoy spending time alone.  This is where the similarities end.

Empaths have the ability to sense energy and have a tendency to absorb it, particularly the energies from other people.  This means that empaths are subject to the emotions of the environment in which they are in, to the point where sometimes the negative emotions and others pain are internalised until the empath is not sure what pain or emotions are theirs and what is something they’ve brought on board.  All of this can make empaths feel drained, irritable, tired and confused.  If an empath doesn’t spend enough time recharging, it can lead to anxiety, stress, chronic fatigue or other exhaustion based issues in the body.

If you know an empath or are an empath, you will know they have a tendency to ask a lot of questions!  They don’t do this to be annoying, they do it because they are able to sense when, and they know if, something has changed and they need to find out why, what and how this has happened.  Energy shifts will affect them acutely and most empaths shield themselves from energetic changes as best they can – sometimes it’s just not quite enough and they will become anxious.

If you’re looking for a true friend, an empath will always be there.  It may take a long time for them to open up to you and to talk to you about their innermost feelings and secrets, even though you may have already ‘revealed all’ to them.  This is because they want to ensure that when they do expose themselves emotionally to you, you will be able to support their vulnerability.  When they do connect with you, they do so at a very deep level and the friendship you have will endure to the end of time.

Empaths will seek out soul mates, soul friends and trusted tribes for the reason of being able to show their vulnerability in a safe relationship.

Most empaths will identify as being ‘weird’.  It’s part of who they are from a young age and through time will laugh about their weirdness.  They connect deeply to crystals, astrology, nature, energy healing, essential oils, psychics and anything esoteric.  These are all things they innately understand and energies they feel most comfortable with.  Many empaths have strong spiritual experiences and are highly intuitive.

As I used to say to my mother from a very young age, “don’t try to understand me, just love me”!

Wilderness Connections

Muir Woods 2 07Jul18

As a child I had a connection with nature, not something that was encouraged by my parents as it meant walking dirt and leaves into the house, so I was ‘allowed’ to play on the grass but told to stay away from the trees.

I remember wishing that I could climb the many trees at the back of our garden or spend time in the woods at the end of our street but knew that the boundaries had been drawn and I couldn’t cross them.  Growing up in New Zealand with its rich flora and abundance of forests and woodlands, always meant that we were never too far from the mysteries of the earth and on the rare occasion we holidayed on the remote Pacific coast, I was able to roam through this seeming wilderness for the summer without a care of trampling in dirt and leaves.

During my late teens and into my twenties, my upbringing had conditioned me to view nature as ‘something that was just there but not something we interacted with’ and, although I would always spend time wherever I could in the small gardens in the square I lived in in London or I’d walk through Hyde Park or Green Park, I never really gave the environment a second thought.  Subconsciously I was aware that spending this brief time with the trees seemed to calm my centre and bring me back into alignment.

I was, and still am, a ‘greenie’, however at that time it meant supporting global charities fighting mighty corporations taking advantage of the general apathy of the world population whilst it began exploiting the natural wonders for profit.  Now, we have evolved (for want of a better word) to understand that being a greenie is someone who appreciates and would fight for all aspects of the natural environment in which we live.

When I moved to Australia in my early thirties, my senses were sent into overdrive with the new smells and sights of the Australian landscape – gums, wattle, red dirt, the dryness of the air and the very thin layer of dust that always seemed to be everywhere, even in the middle of the city.  However I never really felt as strong a connection with the earth as I did in the northern hemisphere.  The natural environment is old, many hundreds of thousands of years old and little evolution has happened there.  The land is harsh and unforgiving, a land that its native aboriginal caretakers understand and worship.  For the rest of us, creating a bond with the land is hard and, for me, elusive.

Last week, whilst staying with family in California, I had the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful ancient forests left on this earth just outside San Francisco.  A forest of giant redwoods dating back over a thousand years.  We arrived early in the morning before the many tour buses and were able to walk through these beautiful gentle giants in the warmth of the early morning sun and allow the solitude and immense healing energies to wash over us.  These beautiful ancestors of the earth have survived so much that nature and man has thrown at them however I fear that there is sadness in this forest as they are becoming overwhelmed with the slowly infringing suburbs and the number of tourists who visit there daily.

muir-woods-1-07jul181.jpg

Along the well-marked paths created for human travel, there are specific trees we are able to touch, who have been worn shiny with hands rubbing at the bark.  I was one of those humans who touched these trees because the ‘need’ to do so was almost overwhelming.  I can only speak for myself when I explain the sense of oneness I felt when I did so.  I felt a connection to the planet.  I could feel the movement of every particle of energy that makes up the fabric of all that is.

What I also felt was a sadness emanating from some of these families of trees (each family is an offshoot of a much older tree, and they grow in clusters around the oldest tree or its remains) as well as a plethora of emotions from the thousands of tourists that had touched these tree before me.  Whilst I revealed in the bliss that was the oneness with the planet and the Universe, I also became weakened by the ghosts of human emotions that also flooded through me – sometimes being an empath really sucks!

This planet is a truly wonderful place and each country, state, county, shire, city, town and village has a unique story to tell through its woodlands and forests, town parks and tree lined streets.  Wherever you reside in this world, wherever your travels take you, step aside for the briefest of moments and connect to these pockets of wildness.

Connecting to the planet is a connection to the Universe and ultimately, this connection gives us an awareness of everything.  Draw in the healing powers and feel the unconditional love seep through you.  Take this unconditional love out into the world with you and give it to those you come in contact with every moment of your being.

The giving of unconditional love to everyone and everything you come into contact with is the greatest service you can give to the world.

5 Ways of connecting with nature in the city

Urban indoor jungle

The Earth is the centre of our existence.  With our modern lives enhanced by technology and fast conveniences, it is easy to forget how much we depend on the Earth just as our ancestors did.  The difference now is that as society has evolved our connection to the planet we live on, our source of life, has deteriorated to the point of near destruction.  We can turn this around by rebuilding the connection, educating those around us and building strong communities.  Here are five ways you can reconnect with nature if you live in an urban environment.

Walk barefoot in the grass or on the beach.  Feel the connection to the earths energy beneath our soles and allow the sensations to bring alive emotions and feelings we hold deep within our souls.  By walking barefoot or pressing our hands into the earth, we create a literal bond with the earth

Tree hugging isn’t just for the hippies!  It is proven that there are emotional benefits associated with hugging trees.  Choose a tree that resonates with you, one where you feel the deep-rooted calming energy from it and meditate under it.  Connect yourself with the ground and imagine becoming the tree, the roots and its branches.  Imagine releasing all your negativity and the thoughts that no longer serve you and absorb only positive, grounding energy from the Earth.

Source locally grown foods wherever possible.  If you can eat organic and sustainable foods from your local farmers market, it benefits your community.  Remember that the food has been grown by local farmers on the land that surrounds you instead of food that has been hauled great distances on the back of trucks, refrigerated and stacked on supermarket shelves.

Plant your own garden if you have room.  You don’t need a large backyard to do this with balcony gardens in apartment buildings becoming the norm.  Try growing your own herbs, vegetables and fruits.  Companion planting with flowers is aesthetically pleasing and good for your soul.

Bring the outside, inside by having potted plants in your living areas.  Choose something with a good energy and safe for pets and children.  Talking to your plants, even naming your plants will help them to grow and it is a good release for those of us who live alone.

3 Ways to Reconnect with your Inner Self

Stepping

We live in a patriarchal society driven by science and engineering, greed and power, actions and accomplishments.  As women, our senses lie with the natural world, with nurturing, creating and caring.  Connecting with our feminine energy regularly is vital for our hormonal health, happiness and our inner sense of self.

In ancient times, our traditions understood this and honoured the many gifts of the Divine Feminine.  In this hectic masculine world, women are realising that we need to reclaim these connections to balance the world.

The following are small but achievable actions you can take daily to reconnect back to your Self and to our beginnings.

Fill your environment with beauty : begin by clearing the clutter, in your home, your office and any space you have as your own.  Clear away everything that does not serve you and fill it with what pleases your senses and your Spirit.  Bring in the calming influences of plants and flowers, rich fabrics, sea shells, crystals, essential oils or anything else that comes from nature that soothes your inner Self.

Slow down and breathe : stop multitasking and begin engaging in each task that you do.  Understand that by living in the moment, you are connecting with the energies of the Earth and savouring each moment however mundane.  Sometimes we forget that each moment that passes is the only time we have to live that moment.  Once it’s upon us, it is gone.  Enjoy the aroma of your morning coffee and appreciate the hands that have brought it from the Earth to your table, savour the piece of chocolate as it melts on your tongue knowing the richness that the Earth has provided for you.

Connect with your Heart : our hearts are our fountains of happiness, where true joy resides.  In our busy world, we lose touch with our inner feelings and the workings of our hearts.  By taking a couple of moments to lay our hand on our heart, close our eyes and truly listen to what it is telling us, we allow ourselves to reconnect back to our inner Self and to live with clarity and love.

Small beginnings lead to bigger steps.

3 Ways to Nourish your Inner Self

balance-cobblestone-conceptual-279470

To reconnect with our inner Goddess, the Divine that resides in each of us and to centre ourselves back into our reality, we need to create space and time for our Self.

Enrich your Being time : create small time capsules in your day that are purely for you to reconnect with your Inner Self.  Create a morning meditation ritual, take time out at lunchtime to sit in a park and enjoy the sunshine with no interruptions, take half an hour each night to spend quietly readying yourself for bed.  Whatever Being time you choose, begin by connecting with your heart and concentrate on your breathing.  With each of these actions, you are living in the now, free from thoughts and deadlines.  You are Being, not Doing.

Cultivate your dreams : Although we live in the mundane world with set boundaries and routines, never lose sight of your dreams and aspirations.  By connecting to our Self and creating space in our lives, so too can we connect with our dreams and aspirations through daydreams, the quiet space where we connect to our inner guidance and the guidance of Spirit.  Our daydreams are our place of trust and joy, an inner knowing that everything is possible and through this we can see a path to our aspirations becoming a reality.

Gracious Acceptance : our feminine energy flows from our willingness to accept what life throws at us and to know that we are able, through the memories we carry in our DNA, to adapt and grow into each circumstance with acceptance and not anger – although circumstances that endanger, or threaten to endanger, ourselves and our families will see our Warrior Goddess come to the forefront!  When you are next offered a compliment, graciously accept it for it comes from a place of warmth and respect.  Ask for help when you need it without fear of retaliation, as the Universe teaches us the more we allow ourselves to receive, the more we are able to give.

3 Ways to Honour your Inner Self

Selflove 1.jpg

Honouring our Inner Self is the greatest gift we can bestow upon ourselves.  When we are truly at peace with who we are, we can truly then serve the world.

Initiate Self-Love : Inner Peace begins from within.  By learning self-love, acceptance of whom we are physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually is to truly understand the gifts of the Universe.  Each one of us is beautiful and sacred, a temple for our Spirit to experience life so learn to treat yourself with the love, support and nurturing it deserves.  Be gentle with your thoughts and self-talk – your body is your best friend, talk to it as you would your best friend.  There is nothing in this world that is perfect – perfection is an illusion.  To reach perfection is to fail – there is nothing more to achieve once perfection is reached.  Not one Goddess from our histories was perfect – Artemis was lanky and lean, Aphrodite was soft and curvy and small breasted while Frigg was tall and ‘motherly’.

Connect with Nature, the Mother that Nurtures us all : when we spend time outside, in our backyards, the park or hiking, we instantly connect with the Earth and with our Inner Self.  The Earth nourishes each of us by providing the food we eat, cleansing the air we breathe and allowing us to ground our inner Self.  Take off your shoes and enjoy the energy from the Earth, lie in the grass and enjoy the sunshine – allow yourself to soak in the healing energies she offers.  In return allow her to take your cares and troubles and calm your heart.  By creating a regular practice of connecting to the Earth, your inner strength and wisdom will flourish.

Know your boundaries : all women, irrespective of their nationality, customs or beliefs, have an issue with boundaries and the hardest of these is our ability to just say “No”.  It is a part of who we are and is part of the Divine Feminine.  However, it is necessary in the world in which we live, to realise that we cannot please everybody.  A part of learning Self-Love is knowing when to say no to demands that do not serve our higher good whether they be requests, relationships or habits.  Learn to release them whilst remembering the lessons they’ve taught us.  It is not possible for each of us to be a master of everything but to know what we are masterly at and to acknowledge it.

Connecting to the Power of the Divine Feminine

milky-way-916523_1280

When we connect to the Divine Feminine, to the emotions held deep within us, we surrender to the mysteries of the Universe – our innermost feelings of both our heart and our bodies.  It is a guide to the wild, untamed parts of our souls that current society has taught us to ignore and keep tightly shut.

It is a connection to our authentic truth, an unearthing of our deep knowing and feminine wisdom.  It is a connection to the ‘magick’ that we hold inside our soul.

Because of this, there is no right or wrong way to connect with the Divine Feminine just as there is no perfect way to be the Divine Feminine – it is infinite possibilities, it is infinite transformations, it is infinite healings of our body, mind and soul.  It teaches us to no longer hide who we are but to reconnect to ourselves and to our communities.

Connecting into the Power of the Divine Feminine is a bringing back to our beginnings, the roots of our existence for both men and women.  It is unearthing a more organic and creative life, of acceptance, tolerance, caring, loving and a connected way of Being.

The Masculine and the Feminine are interwoven and connected for eternity so moving back into our authentic selves is an opportunity for everyone to help heal the Goddess with many names – Mother Earth, Gaia, Jord, Terra, Mother Nature, Great Mother, Earth Mother and Pachamama.  It is like plugging each of us into the primal force of the Universe and returning us to a place to nourish the whole planet.
